Swimmer sparks huge rescue operation on icy Wörthersee

A 27-year-old Chinese student taking a swim across an ice-cold lake in Carinthia sparked a huge rescue operation at the weekend, after concerned locals saw him enter the lake and swim off.

Authorities mounted a massive rescue operation with boats and divers after eye-witnesses in the town of Krumpendorf spotted the man entering lake Wörthersee and swimming off in the direction of Sekirn.

The crew of one of the boats finally located the Chinese man in an unlocked swimming cabin on the lake shore in Sekirn, in which he had left warm clothing before going swimming.

Rescuers took the man to Klagenfurt General Hospital, where doctors examined him and found him to have a slight case of hypothermia.

The man told police he liked challenges and had therefore decided to go swimming in the lake, where the water temperature was only five degrees Celsius.
